To honor the 100th anniversary of the genocide in Armenia, the choir of the Junges Ensemble Berlin and the Prometheus Ensemble Berlin will perform requiems by Tigran Mansurian and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The concert will be conducted by Frank Markowitsch and will take place at 8 pm on 30 October 2016 in the chamber music hall of the Berlin Philharmonie.

The Armenian composer Tigran Mansurian’s Requiem was first performed in 2011, and is dedicated to the Armenian people who were murdered in Turkey between 1915 and 1917. The composer’s family was directly affected by the genocide. This remarkable music brings together the sacred text in Latin with the Middle-Eastern sounds of Armenia in a powerful and moving manner.

The second half of the program will be devoted to one of the best-known works of Western sacred music, the Requiem by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The combination of these two works from different epochs and different cultures on a single evening promises to create a unique and inspiring atmosphere. Both works share a language expressing both loss and the hope for justice.
