Forum Chormusik” [Forum for Choral Music] is the motto for the winter semester 2018/19 at the Hochschule for Music Freiburg. Under the general direction and in the concept of Frank Markowitsch, there will be concerts, master classes, sing-alongs and seminars featuring numerous aspects of choral music. The semester will begin with a master class in choral direction led by Prof. Manfred Schreier that will focus on contemporary vocal music. In December, there will be performances of a staged version for children and families of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. Prior to these performances, there will be preparatory workshops for elementary school classes in cooperation with the music education department of the Hochschule for Music Freiburg. The month of January will be devoted to international exchange projects: choirs and orchestras from Freiburg, Berlin, and St. Petersburg will perform a Russian-German program in the Berlin Philharmonie. This will be followed by concerts in St. Petersburg and Freiburg to initiate a new cooperative agreement between the Hochschule in Freiburg and the Conservatory in St. Petersburg. Finally, in February there will be a performance of Bach’s St. John Passion as a sing-along concert, particularly by school students taking advanced music courses dealing with Bach’s work. Following the “Mendelssohn Project” in the summer semester of 2017 and the “Baroque Project” during the 2017/18 winter semester, “Forum Chormusik” will be the third semester-long project in which students and audiences have the opportunity to explore multiple aspects of an overriding general topic.
